Our lives are made up of a web of relationships — with colleagues at work, at home with parents, siblings and children, with our neighbors, and so much more. One important type of relationship, which can take different shapes and develop around a variety of interests, is friendship. Some friends are the people we rely on — we cry, laugh, sing, pray, and do life with — and they can do the same with us. To find and have a good friend is something priceless. What does the Bible say about friendship, and what timeless wisdom can we glean from the Scriptures on relationships to navigate this important part of our lives? One of the realities about us as people is that we generally gravitate toward other people and toward relationships with them.
What does the Bible say about? Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.
I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion. Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.
He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.
And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken. An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones. An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband.
For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. What accord has Christ with Belial?
Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? So they are no longer two but one flesh.
\r\n\tbible verses about building relationships
What therefore God has ed together, let not man separate. This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.
The man gave names to all What does the bible says about relationships and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.
And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lordplans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
You have captivated my heart, my sister, my bride; you have captivated my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace. Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And you shall not lie sexually with your neighbor's wife and so make yourself unclean with her.
As many as seven times? When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.
And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. Or do you not know that he who is ed to a prostitute becomes one body with her? Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more ificant than yourselves. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Behold, children are a heritage from the Lordthe fruit of the womb a reward. Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.
Scriptures on relationships
Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called.
Why do we have relationships?
In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. Three things are too wonderful for me; four I do not understand: the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a virgin. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus.
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality. And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel. He shall be free at home one year to be happy with his wife whom he has taken.
Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
And God blessed them. See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
