Disappointing trip to Kufri near Shimla

Kufri near Shimla, over the years, is a must- visit place for tourists coming to Shimla. This tourist season again lakhs of tourists will be visiting the place with much anticipation. After all, every travel operator and taxiwalla refers this place to one and all who visit Shimla.

A quick search on Internet suggests that Kufri has been a preferred destination with honeymooners for number of years. And lets be honest, we Indians love to do the sheep walk. “My chacha’s son- in-law went for honeymoon to Kufri, we must go as well.” So if you are planning your next vacation to Shimla,  here are 15 reasons why you should stay away from Kufri.

1. Kufri used to be a preferred destination once when snow was in abundance in Shimla. However, for the last 3-4 years snowfall has reduced drastically and trust me, probability of finding snow in Kufri is extremely low now.

2. Tourism in Kufri is controlled by unions of daily-wage earners, seeking to maximize profits by duping tourists into taking mule rides. At the base camp of Mahasu peak, they will offer you a 14- km ride up for Rs 350/- per person. However, by the time you reach up you have barely climbed a 2 – 3 odd km. The same distance can be covered in 20 – 30 min while walking up and on a fairly easy trail. Here is a tip – if you start climbing up, after every 20 steps you climb, the rates of going up on the mule will come down exponentially.

Kufri horses

3. Certainly, a ride on the mules is exciting, but there have been cases of accidents where people have fallen from these mules. The problem is not the mules, but the trail, which have not been maintained over the years to carry such activity.

4. If you are the kind who wants to walk up and enjoy the forest trail, remember you will have to take the same trail as the mules and it is ridden with mule crap.

5. The trail will not smell fresh flowers. Instead, you will see dust and mule crap to take care of the fragrance to make up for your experience in Kufri.

6. When you reach the Mahasu peak, there is a Nag Devta temple, which is worth seeing and of course there are beautiful vistas which pan out at a distance but please don’t care to even look around your immediate environment. You will see huge dumps of plastic bottles and cups to give company.

7. The temple is adjacent to a ground, which is bereft of even single blade of grass. So don’t expect to see any garden or greenery at the top. Of course, there will be more dust to eat with your snacks.

8. If you are the one who likes to see nice architecture than all you find in Kufri is shanties. A so-called modern market complex has come up in Kufri but these are infact tin-covered sheds serving chai and pakodas. The other structures to be seen in Kufri are cemented ramshackle building of panchayat bhawan and of course a Sulabh International toilet.

9. Even if you are a picnicker and looking for a private getaway then Kufri for sure is not a place to visit as it is thronged by thousands of people every day.

10. If you are the kind who hates to be photographed as a Phoolan Devi with a gun sitting on a Yak, then please don’t visit Kufri’s Mahasu peak.

11. Animals like Yaks and Python are openly mistreated day in and day out in Kufri. Remember, it is patronage by tourists which helps promote this business and certainly you would not like to be party to it.

12. Huge mobile towers in the vicinity of probably all the mobile companies will make you realize that your boss’s email is waiting to be seen in your Blackberry.

13. If you are the one who is seeking peace of mind in the tranquility of nature,  certainly Kufri is not a place. Kufri Fun World, a supposedly high-end entertainment park blares loud music throughout the day from its gates to attract the visitors towards it. Wonder why the owners can’t just place simple and attractive hoardings to tempt the tourists.

14. To experience all the above, you have to pay an entry fee of Rs 5 per person, which goes into the kitty of the local panchayat. Two years back this seemed like a pioneering idea. I felt as if the money which I gave will be used to pay for the upkeep and improvement of facilities in Kufri, but haven’t seen much improvement since then.

15. And please, Kufri is certainly not a honeymooner’s delight, after all holding hands with your better half, amidst hundreds of tourists, whiff of mule crap and din of fun world music is not at all romantic

So folks, here are some reasons which I could gather in one sojourn to Kufri. Let’s see if you can suggest some more. The comments section is open. Fill it up with more mule crap.

  1. This was a disastrous trip. 500 rupee for the horrible mule ride where the street was malodorous stinking of urine and dung and then horrible dangerous stone filled walkway where we were charged twice by 2 gram panchayats 10 rupees each (these charges were not disclosed at the start of the trip), for what I don’t understand as they haven’t maintained the road at all. When you reach the peak the place is dismal, at the lookout point the gram panchayat has again cordoned off the area and charges another 200 rupees to look through the telescopes or even just enter the space to see or take photos. I suspect the gram panchayat is totally corrupt and is using the money for their own means as they haven’t provided any roads, water, grass, gardens, or anything. If you look at the census figures it’s very low population. What are they doing with this money? They should be investigated.

  3. I am visiting Fagu for a few days, and had planned to stop at Kufri on the way. After your review, I will avoid it. Thanks for the inputs.

Can you suggest if there would be a bus connecting Fagu to Chindi ? Both are rather small places, so as a person with local knowledge

    • In case you wish to go skiing I would suggest conisdering Narkanda which has a proper ski slope and more over the skiing is conducted by Mountaineering Institute and Himachal Tourism guys. Plenty of small and big hotels at Narkanda including one run by HPTDC.

And Narkanda is a 90 minutes drive from Kufri..!

  6. I am a local person and I think that Kufri is overrated. Still, if you go to Kufri I recommend Kufri fun campus over other amusement parks.

  7. We visited the place in Jul’16. It had rained for previous couple of weeks and the path to Kufri was inundated and got mixed with pony droppings. The whole area was stinking and we never felt we were visiting a tourist spot. It is better skip this place altogether. compared to other places somehow this place is a black spot for HP Tourism.

  10. very risky to travel on rough terrain with ride on horses .We also had a bad experience.
Something should be done to improve safety.02 lanes should be created for upward and downward journey.
Separate track for those who wants to go by his own.

  11. Thank you very much for the valuable blog.
I was there on 9/June. Thank God I was there early morning walk at around 7 am, walked all the places (chini bunglow, nature amusment park, 200 meteres trekking on the trek leading to Mahasu peak) and returned back to hotel at 9. Based on this experience we decided to leave from Kufri to Narkanda.

Yogesh chauhan July 6, 2016 at 10:42 am Reply
      • Road condition is okay.Road deteriorates every winter as it freezes and soil is poured over onto road to reduce slipperiness. Still its one of best roads of Shimla.

  18. unfortunately I saw it after i went there n hurt my 5 yr old son in the trip. after the almost to death experience on the mules, we reached Fun World. We assumed the safety precautions would be as par Delhi amusement parks.
Bt i guess we were wrong. My son while on the most easy ride called fish ride flewed and hit the peripheral wall when the ride got speed because it had no seat belt and no handle to hold on to. He got a major injury on his head. On the top of that there is no medical facilities available and since there is no vehicular access to Fun World from Road( which is a requirement to get sanctioning from govt.), we couldnt get any emergency facility. When we were continuously pleading for help and howling till our throats gt soar , the manager of fun World got his bouncers who tried to hit me(mom of the child) and my mother with a stick while we had our wounded child in our hands. We entered at arnd 1, n my child gt hurt by 1:30, he got his stiches done at 5. even the police dint help. I am trying to fight a case in consumer court( which supposed to be made for consumers help) is also full of beaurocracy. I hope to get justice……

But I just request you ppl to not take the mule rides and not visit Fun World if you want you and your family safe…

    • Sir, its 2018 now. My niece fractured her foot getting down from a mule after reaching Kufri. Even now there is no emergency service. The poor girl had to walk down for a km or so with a fractured leg. The fracture that happened at 1 in the afternoon was put in a plaster only at 6 in the evening. I hope the tourism dept of Shimla wakes up and puts an emergency service in place.

  21. what ever written here is true we wen there 10 2008 october.he mule wallas would suck 250 rupees from u for just less than 2 km ride which can be easily done by walk. only problem is here is lot of mule crap but that is only for up to some 50 to 100 feet. This is intelligently  done by the mule wallas to discourage tourists from walking.Tourists may think all the track up to kufri will be like that only.Frankly there is nothing there to see.Dont try to buy ant thing there u can get all the material they sell at fun world at half the price in Delhi.

    let me know

    • These pictures are that of the Kufri tourist place. Resorts nearby are quite good. Toshali Resort and Shilon Resot are about 10 km from Kufri towards Chail and best for tranquility.

Can’t say this about Kufri Resort as it is just before the mentioned tourist place. It is fine if you stay within the Resort but once you come out you know what to expect.

      Hope this helps.

  24. I agree. In fact Naldehra and Narkanda are far better, one-day round trip destination, from Shimla ,than Kufri. In Narkanda ,from Hathu Peak one can have a view of at least 250 degree snow capped himalaya peaks , fresh air and almost zero pollution .

Pathetic Hygiene issues at Himachal Roadways Food Stop

A video on social media has gone viral over pathetic condition of a dhaba, food joint, where Himachal Roadways (HRTC) buses stop for dinner when plying between Delhi and various tourists towns of Himachal Pradesh. Irony is that these food joints are approved by Himachal Roadways top management. After repeated complaints from the people about […]
