Nahan and Renuka

nahan Situated at the Southern tip of Himachal Pradesh, Nahan is off the touristy trail. At an height of 932 meter, Nahan is situated in the Shivalik hills. The city is believed to be founded in 1621 by Raja Karan Praksh in 1621. It is beleived the city takes it name from Nahar (The Lion) who was an companion of a saint who used to live here. Nahan  is closer to the plains as compared to the peaks. Nahan is a popular tourist destination due to its scenic beauty and picturesque surroundings. The forest routes filled with lush greenery adds to the calm nature of the place. Nahan is a small town in the centre of lush green mountains nearby. Abundant green woodlands, eminent mountain ranges, absolutely carved river valleys make Nahan a perfect place to holiday for nature and adventure lovers.

Nahan is a district headquarter of Sirmaur district.  Nahan is a good base to explore surrounding areas of Renuka ji and Paonta Sahib.

Renuka Lake (38 km) and Paonta Sahib Gurudwara (45 km) are the main tourist attractions here. Renuka also has the protected wild life sanctuary. Renuka offers a lake,  wildlife and mountains to boot. Named after goddess Renuka ji this place has it all. The lake the largest in Himachal on which the place is named has temples dedicated to goddess Renuka and son Parsuram. Renuka Wild Life Sanctuary is at a short distance with animals like Asiatic Lion, Barking Deer, Leopard may be seen along with many birds. Feeding the fishes and turtles at the lake is also a unique experience. No non-veg or alcohol is allowed in the lake complex.

Accomodation at Nahan is available at The Grand View Resort and the Sirmour Retreat on the Nahan Renuka road. These are at a distance of 15 km from Nahan. At Renuka ji one can stay at the HPTDC Hotel Renuka which overlooks the lake. Grand View Resort is highy recommended for the views and service.

Nahan is one of the easily approachable destinations from Delhi and Chandigarh. It take about 6 hours to reach here from Delhi. Highly recommended for a weekend break and not too taxing drive from the plains. However if you are looking for mall road or places to shop then Nahan will be a disappointment.

Getting There

  By Road – the distance is 265 km from Delhi. Take the NH1 to Chandigarh. The route will be Delhi – Karnal – Pipli – Shahbad – Narayangarh – Kala Amb – Nahan.

From Shahbad leave the national highway and take the Panchkula state highway and then later turn to Narayangarh.

  By Train – The nearest railway station is Ambala. Nahan is further 100 km

  By Air – Nearest Airports are at Chandigarh and Dehradun.
